Sushi 2048 is the classic number puzzle served at a sushi counter. Every tile is a piece of sushi or something that goes with it, and merging two equal tiles moves you up the menu. Start with seasoned rice and keep merging until you reach omakase. It is free to play in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer.

Sushi started as a way to preserve fish in fermented rice. The fast hand-pressed nigiri style grew up in Edo, now Tokyo, in the early 1800s. The California roll, an inside-out roll with avocado, was created in North America, and it helped make sushi popular far outside Japan.

The 11 sushi tiles

The ladder moves from basics to the top of the menu. Seasoned rice is the base of every piece, and wasabi and pickled ginger, called gari, sit on the side. The cucumber roll, or kappa maki, is a simple starter, and tamago is a sweet rolled omelette. Next come the California roll, shrimp nigiri (ebi) and salmon nigiri. Tuna sashimi is fish served without rice, and otoro is the rich, fatty tuna belly prized by sushi fans. The 2048 tile is omakase, the meal where you leave the choices to the chef.

Tips to win Sushi 2048

  1. Keep your top tile in one corner like the chef’s station. Otoro should sit beside it so a second Otoro can merge into Omakase without moving across the board.
  2. Line up a falling row such as Tuna Sashimi, Salmon Nigiri, Shrimp Nigiri, California Roll. A merge at the end can then roll the whole row forward.
  3. Swipe mostly in two directions and keep the third for emergencies. The fourth direction pulls your corner tile away and lets a stray Rice tile slip in.

Sushi 2048 FAQ

What is the final tile in Sushi 2048?

The final tile is Omakase, which means leaving it to the chef. It is the full tasting experience at a sushi counter, so it sits above even otoro, the prized fatty tuna.

What is the difference between nigiri and sashimi?

Nigiri is a slice of fish pressed onto a small mound of seasoned rice. Sashimi is the fish on its own, with no rice. Both appear as tiles on the ladder.

Is the California roll Japanese?

Not originally. The California roll was created in North America in the second half of the 20th century. It is an inside-out roll, with rice on the outside, usually filled with crab or imitation crab, avocado and cucumber.

Can I play Sushi 2048 on my phone?

Yes. Sushi 2048 runs in mobile browsers, so you just swipe to slide the tiles. On a computer, use the arrow keys.
