Play Lord of the Rings 2048 online

Lord of the Rings 2048 is the classic sliding puzzle turned into a quest across Middle-earth. Swipe or use the arrow keys to move the tiles, and merge two matching ones to travel further from home. Start in the Shire and keep merging until you hold The One Ring. It is free to play in your browser on a phone or computer.

J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings was first published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955. Peter Jackson’s film trilogy followed from 2001 to 2003, and The Return of the King won all 11 Oscars it was nominated for, including Best Picture. The ladder follows the Fellowship from the Shire towards the fires of Mount Doom.

The 11 Lord of the Rings tiles

The ladder follows the journey of the Fellowship. It starts in the Shire, with Sam the loyal gardener and Frodo, who carries Bilbo’s sword Sting along with the Ring. Next come the other companions: Gimli the dwarf with his axe, Legolas the elf archer, Boromir of Gondor and Aragorn, the heir to the throne. Gandalf the wizard guides them all. Minas Tirith, the white city of Gondor, is where the great battle is fought, and Mount Doom in Mordor is where the quest must end. The One Ring takes the 2048 tile, because the whole story turns on it.

Tips to win Lord of the Rings 2048

  1. Keep your biggest tile in one corner, as safe as the Shire. With Mount Doom anchored there, a second Mount Doom beside it forges The One Ring.
  2. Line up a row that falls in value from the corner: Minas Tirith, Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir. Merges then march along it like the Fellowship on the road.
  3. Resist the move that drags your corner tile out. One careless swipe can let a small Shire tile sneak into the corner, and getting it out takes many turns.

Lord of the Rings 2048 FAQ

What is the final tile in Lord of the Rings 2048?

The final tile is The One Ring, forged by Sauron to rule the other Rings of Power. Every character and place on the ladder is tied to the quest to destroy it, so it is the natural end of the journey.

Why is there a potato on the Samwise tile?

Sam is a gardener and cook who loves simple hobbit food, and his “po-tay-toes” line in The Two Towers film is one of the best-loved moments in the trilogy. The potato emoji is a nod to that scene.

Is Lord of the Rings 2048 an official game?

No. It is a fan-made puzzle that uses names from Tolkien’s story as tile labels with standard emoji pictures. It is not made by or connected to the Tolkien Estate, Warner Bros. or the film studios.

How many Oscars did The Return of the King win?

The Return of the King won 11 Academy Awards in 2004, including Best Picture. It won every category it was nominated in, and its 11 wins tie the record held by Ben-Hur and Titanic.
